Xerokambos is located 103 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos, 47 km south of Sitia and 69 km east of Ierapetra, known as a destination for a quiet vacation. Xerokambos is one of the most remote areas of the island of Crete that boasts one of the most beautiful beaches of eastern Crete, ideal for relaxing holidays. It can be accessed either through the Siteia-Ziros road or through the asphalted road to Zakros.
In Xerokambos time seems to have stopped several decades ago, where wild mountains are in direct contrast to the endless sea and the beautiful beaches. The whole area offers spectacular views of the South Cretan Sea that calm the mind and soothe the soul. It is worth making the road trip to the area of Xerokampos, where idyllic small coves with fine sand, pebbles and crystal clear waters are waiting for you, one after the other, some of which remain empty even in August, at the peak of the tourist season. The mountainous agricultural village of Ziros is at an altitude of 590 m. with a family atmosphere, where you can enjoy a delicious Cretan meal.
Far from the bustling crowds, visitors are rewarded with a collection of fine beaches and coves, truly unspoilt and crowd-free, found in a relatively small area in Xerokambos; among the beaches with rocks, small pebbles and turquoise waters, there is a beach called Argilos with clay that exists at this place for lovers of natural spa. There you can make clay mask, let it dry in the sun and then dive into the water, enjoying a unique completely natural spa experience.
From the village Ziros, the road leads to the deserted settlement Chametoulio that leads to Lamnoni, located about 4 km to the east. From Lamnoni you can walk along the ravine that soon turns into a rugged gorge. Hiking in the gorge Lamnoni takes about 2 hours and its descent is quite easy and smooth. It ends near the road approximately 2-3 km from Ziros. From here, it’s an easy 20-minute walk down to Xerokambos.
If you find yourself on summer vacation in eastern Crete you should get to know Xerokambos up-close. On August 29th, the locals organize a traditional feast (panigiri) in the name of Saint John.
