Mochlos A hidden gem

Cretan seaside destinations are wonderful places to have a truly authentic experience of the local culture. If you are a traveler who prefers to go off the beaten track and hang out in Eastern Crete, Mochlos is an alternative destination, next to bustling, lively cities like Aghios Nikolaos and Sitia, a lesser-known destination but equally beautiful worth to visit on your next visit in Crete.

Mochlos is one of those Cretan seaside villages that retain a rustic island-style lifestyle that relaxes the senses. Nestled amongst the famous gulf of Mirabello, on the other side of the cosmopolitan Elounda, the location oozes history, character, and charm while the inhabitants are very welcoming, friendly and smiling people that will make you feel very comfortable from the first moment.

This kind of sleepy fishing village is home to some very old attractions, but also to some well-fitted villas to rent, allowing guests to completely remove themselves from the busy outside world and enjoy quality time with family and friends. There are tavernas where you will be eating right next to the water and enjoying excellent seafood without being disturbed by motor traffic. There’s even a rustic-chic cocktail bar, perched on the rocks. In Mochlos you will also enjoy colorful sunsets, but the serenity of the morning with the sun rising over the sea will be unforgettable.

The only small sandy beach of Mochlos is situated below the taverns, but there are other beaches and coves at the east of the village, towards Sfaka with crystal clear waters fantastic for snorkeling. West of the village lies the small fishing-port of Limenaria and two more small pebbly beaches. You cannot be in Mochlos without visiting the islet of Saint Nicholaos with the ruins of a thriving Minoan community, where you can freely walk around the site and lose yourself in history. The nearby villages of Sfaka, Lastros, Tourloti and Myrsini are worth visiting for their traditional style and some very old chapels. Don't miss visiting the picturesque chapel of Holy Spirit (Agio Pneuma) which has panoramic views to Mirabello Gulf. Off the coast of Elounda, Spinalonga is a major attraction for visitors who want to explore the ghost town of the Leper Island.
