Just a few kilometres away from the centre of Chania (17km), the Botanical Park and Garden is one of a kind outdoor garden in the foothills of the White Mountains, on the road Chania-Omalos, between Fournes and Lakki. Due to the soil's configuration and microclimate, the garden is a home of different types of fruit trees from all over the world, indigenous medicinal herbs, aromatic spices, ornamental plants and vineyards that attract different wildlife at different months a season. Four brothers have done so much amazing work to create this piece of Eden that grew all over from the ashes of a devastating wild fire in 2004. A burnt centennial olive tree is the only thing to remind that this place is literary reborn from its ashes.
The multi-colored Botanical Garden is a unique natural environment of about 200 acres of agricultural land with nature trails, resting stops, chilling springs and a scenic small lake with ducks, geese and a variety of water birds. The walk lasts one to two hours, where you will see and learn all about the Cretan flora and fauna, as well as numerous of unique tropical and subtropical plants.
Your fantastic day out away from the beach includes a meal at the hilltop-terrace Botanical Restaurant prepared with ingredients cultivated in the garden and traditional cooking methods. Try chicken fillet with orange sauce lime and lemongrass and lamb stuffed with myzithra cheese wrapped in vine leaves. The stone-built open-air amphitheatre is suitable for organised presentations of local customs and traditions of Cretan food, music and dancing.
The Botanical Park and Gardens is open during the tourist season.
