Agia Galini is the last big village to the east on the south coast of Rethymno Prefecture. It is located 61 km southeast of Rethymno and 68 km southwest of Heraklion, at the exit of Amarianosriver.
In the past decades it has managed to achieve huge touristic growth by staying true to the traditions, the values and the culture of Crete. Today it is a famous“anchorage” for sailors traveling from every part of the Mediterranean. After all, Galini means “calmness”. The large beach of Agia Galini is known for the numerous caves that extend along the coast. If you prefer organized beaches, stay close to the port where you will find all necessary comforts. It has thin small pebbles and cold waters due to the river. The sea temperature is 18o C all year long. If you want more privacy, move a little further east, across the river from the bridge. This part is less organized. Here as well the small pebbles and the crystal cool waters are the main feature. In this area there is the camping of Agia Galini. If you move further east, the beach becomes narrow and rocky. It is more isolated here. This is why this part is preferred by nudists. You can reach the beach by car, turning right after the river at the exit of the village.
