Marmara Beach is located 85 km south of Chania and 5 km west of Loutro. It belongs in the broader area of Sfakia, which features many beautiful small beaches. Starting from Chora Sfakion and traveling west one can reach Iliggos Beach, Glyka Nera Beach, Loutro, Lykos Beach and finally Marmara Beach, all of them unique for different reasons.
Most of these beaches can only be reached by boat or on foot, since there are no roads in this part of the island. This looks as if it is a bad thing, still if you think about it, it is the only reason why this region has remained unspoiled preserving its wild characteristics and amazing flora and fauna. Besides, beach hopping by boat is attractive for its own sake. Hiking is also very common around here as another form of “beach hopping” for adventure and nature lovers. Marmara (means “marble”) Beach, formed at the end of Aradena Gorge, stands out due to the soft colorful rocks that cover the area (hence its name). These rocks are also the reason why the waters are so clean and crystal. If you are into snorkeling the seabed here will amaze you. Neat the beach there is a small tavern where you can relax, have a refreshment or lunch. The food is prepared with extra care and homegrown products. There is nothing else around here. The nearest beach is Lykos, about 60 minutes away (on foot). So just make a day out of it. During the summer, there are daily boat routes from Loutro. Once in the Loutro area, visiting Marmara is a “must do”.
