Kourtaliotis Gorge

Kourtaliotis Gorge is located in Rethymno Perfecture, about 20 km south of Rethymno City. The main country road that connects north to south passes right through it, so you will probably cross it on your way to the southern beaches.

It starts from the Village of Koxare and extends all the way to the famous Preveli, after connecting with Frati Gorge. Megas Potamos (The Great River), the last part of Kourtaliotis River and the water source that gives life to Preveli’s entire ecosystem, pours its waters right next to Preveli Beach. Kourtaliotis Gorge is very small as compared to other Cretan gorges, yet it is of magical beauty. Actually, it is perhaps the most wonderful natural attraction in the whole of Rethymno Perfecture. On the main country road, there are many designated parking areas looking down to the steep imposing rocks. Just make a stop to capture the gorge’s beauty with your camera. Crossing it might be difficult for those of you who do not have at least some hiking experience or training. But it can also be exciting as hell.
