Whether you’re staying in Agios Nikolaos or the eastern town of Sitia, Kavoussi and the nearby beaches are close to both centres and easy to reach no matter where you’re based. Going east of Agios Nikolaos you can find villages, archaeological sites, and unique landmarks to explore, and most of all, it’s perfect to relax on, as the region has faced a very mild touristic development. Kavoussi lies 26 km east of Agios Nikolaos town, on the way to Sitia, built at the foot of two imposing mountains is a historic and spirited village that offers many activities and sights.
Azoria, Kastro Minoan settlement, and Vrodas are important archaeological sites in which evidence of past activity is preserved. The “Monumental” olive tree is the oldest of its kind on Crete, and among the top 5 oldest in the world. Northwest of Kavoussi, Theriospilios is a cave with spectacular bands of stalagmites and gives the visitor an excellent impression. The route Chrisopigi-Bebonas-Kavoussi offers amazing views to Mirabello bay, as well as the route Kavousi-Mesonas Gorge-Thripti is one of the most exciting hikes in eastern Crete.
Tholos is the beach of Kavoussi, just 3 km from the village which is formed at the exit of a fertile valley, surrounded by ancient olive groves and vineyards, and is a quiet pebbly and sandy beach. The water is usually blur (tholos means blurred in Greek) with a light blue colour, due to the underwater springs of freshwater coming from the mountain.
Pa(c)hia Ammos The thick sand that spreads across the large beachfront is responsible for the name (pachia ammos means thick sand), next to the fishing village with beautiful waters and amenities.
Agiomantra Beach At the exit of a short gorge which the visitor needs to cross, the beach is a small sheltered cove, ideal for isolation with natural shades and crystal clear waters. Alternatively, the access by the sea is possible by boat from Tholos.
