Elafonissi is situated at the southwest corner of Crete, 75 km southwest of Chania. It is a tiny little island approximately 200 m from the shore forming an amazing lagoon with light blue waters. This is the one daytrip you should take even if it was the only one.
The lagoon is really shallow; you can literally walk to the island. On the island you will discover many small beaches. The whole area is covered with white and pink sand. The beach is well organized, featuring umbrellas, sunbeds, a large bar and many more. There are also a few hotels in the broader area. Elafonissi is a Natura 2000 protected area. The island is full of dunes with sand lilies. It is also a lair for the endangered careta-careta turtles and other species. Respect this natural treasure. Cutting plants or even taking sand is strictly forbidden. You can reach Elafonissi by car (1.5 hours’ drive from Chania) or by bus (there are many organized trips). Stay until the sunset. It is one of those moments when nature reveals all of its beauty.
