Agios Antonios Church in Patsos Gorge

Built literally under a huge mountain rock, like many other churches all around Crete, the Church of Agios Antonios is a sight you do not want to miss. But, there is a lot more than that in this route. In fact, the church is merely a “trigger”.

To reach the church you have to cross the Gorge of Agios Antonios or Patsos Gorge. The church is located halfway through the first part – the easy part - of the gorge. You are in the broader area of Patsos Village, 30 km southeast of Rethymno. The Church of Agios Antonios is actually a very small single room decorated with images of the saint and darkened by the smoke of candles. You will also find some pieces of paper, with written requests, prayers or appreciation messages to Agios Antonios. You can light a candle yourself.
